  17. <p>     Sleight of hand on a grand scale: that's what made
  18. magician DAVID COPPERFIELD famous and savings and loan
  19. executives infamous. So it's only fitting that Copperfield has
  20. purchased a major collection of magic memorabilia from the
  21. Resolution Trust Corporation, the federal agency in charge of
  22. cleaning up the S&L mess. The collection, originally acquired
  23. by a now defunct savings bank, includes artifacts like Houdini's
  24. private letters. "It's a playground, a dream," gushes
  25. Copperfield, who beat out the Library of Congress for the booty.
  26. "But it's not for curiosity seekers," he says. Only "qualified
  27. performers and scholars" will have access.
